Before we get into the benefits, let’s begin with the basics.

What is Note Taking?

Note taking is not just about writing or typing down everything that you hear or read. It is a process of reviewing, connecting and synthesising ideas from your lectures or reading.

Basically, it is organizing the incoming information in a particular manner which will help you comprehend and write down the explanation of the information and ultimately integrate it with the already existing knowledge that you might previously have about the same.

6 Benefits of Note Taking

1. It improves focus.

While learning something new, it is imperative that you should focus on the information being shared with you.

Note Taking helps you achieve this as you are actively taking down points which inturn helps in increasing your attention to detail because you can’t note everything down at the same time and thus, you are compelled to focus on the important details.

2. It promotes active learning.

By taking notes efficiently, you are actively involved in the learning process thus giving it a purpose which will increase your productivity.

This keeps you alert as well. Because when our body becomes active and involved, it helps in avoiding feelings of distractions or drowsiness.

While taking down notes from a lecture, session or video, your attention is towards the speaker and it improves your listening skill as well.

3. It improves comprehension and retention.

There is multiple evidence that prove that note taking helps in increasing memory retention.

It also increases comprehension by breaking down complex information into smaller parts that help learn something easily.

4. It expands attention span.

Again, experiments and evidence show us that note taking helps in extending attention span.

The reason behind it is that it keeps our mind and body activated for a longer period of time.

This is one of the biggest benefits because having a long attention span will help you study for examinations that require studying relentlessly for longer durations.

5. It helps in organizing thoughts and ideas.

By taking notes you are basically creating a structure of the incoming information.

Moreover, to make effective notes, you should add your own observations and opinions in your notes.

It will thus help you to organize your thoughts and ideas and retain them in your memory for a longer period of time.

6. It increases creativity.

Last but not least, it is the most important benefit that note taking has.

After being able to organize your ideas effectively, focus on a particular subject and include your own ideas, you can use your own ways of structuring or presenting your notes which increases creativity and innovation.

So feel free to go ahead and experiment with different ways of note taking.
